The Large Truck Crash Causation Study clearly showed that human error is the most frequent contributor to heavy commercial vehicle crashes. Please encourage our leaders to mandate these amazing safety technologies that are already available. These include automatic emergency braking, electronic stability control, adaptive cruise control with active braking, and lane departure warning systems, among others. RSA is pleased that our years of advocating for Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs) has resulted in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) promulgating a Final Rule requiring this technology on large trucks by December 2017.
Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB)
This technology is a proven highway safety system that can and will save countless lives. Unfortunately, after years of study and successful use by leading motor carriers, this technology has yet to be required for commercial motor vehicles.
In order to prevent these needless deaths and injuries, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) should mandate AEB technology on all large trucks with a gross vehicle weight rating of 10,000 pounds or more. While the agency granted the petition submitted on February 19, 2015 by Road Safe America, the Truck Safety Coalition, Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety, and Center for Auto Safety in October 2015, it is imperative to ensure that NHTSA produces a Final Rule in a timely manner.
NHTSA estimates that current generation AEB systems can prevent more than 2,500 crashes each year and that future generation systems could prevent more than 6,300 crashes annually. Every year a full implementation of AEB is delayed, research estimates that 166 people will unnecessarily die and another 8,000 individuals will suffer serious injuries.
To save these lives, prevent injuries, reduce costs, and ensure families remain whole, we urge you to contact your Representative and Senators to urge NHTSA to make a requirement for AEB technology a high priority and expedite rulemaking to require this lifesaving safety technology in large trucks.
Trucking companies who put safety first are now installing this technology without waiting for a mandate. Road Safe America feels this technology can save hundreds of lives each year with affordable costs.
