Owings, center, beams proudly as he hoists up the ceremonial big check for $25,000 the non-profit received as the top community service award given by Northwestern Mutual Life Foundation during ceremonies at the Buckhead home of Ed and Elly Dobbs Sept. 9. Presenting the check is John W. Wright, left, Managing Partner of the Goodwin Wright Northwestern Mutual Financial Network. Helping Owings hold up the check is Tom Hodgson, right, Executive Director of Road Safe America.
Road Safe America was founded in 2003 by Steve and Susan Owings after their son, Cullum, was killed when his car – stopped in an interstate traffic jam – was crushed from behind by a speeding tractor trailer rig going seven miles above the posted speed limit on cruise control. Road Safe America is working with federal transportation officials and the Obama Administration to have existing speed governors on big trucks activated to keep their speed at 65 mph. The Sunday after Thanksgiving, the busiest highway traffic day of the year, is being observed nationally as Drive Safer Sunday.
