RSA Statement on FMCSA's Speed-Limiter Notice of Intent

Road Safe America is pleased to see the required use of Speed Limiters on our largest trucks moving forward. The frequency of high-speed truck crashes and related injuries and deaths has been alarming over the past 10 years.

Such trucks have had built-in technology, that (when used) electronically limits the top speed of their vehicles, for decades. Dozens of leading countries around the world have required the use of Speed Limiters by their biggest trucks, going back 30 years in some cases. Not one has ever reversed this policy after requiring it. This is common-sense and it is high time that our great country takes advantage of this existing technology to make our highways safer.

Many stakeholders in the industry, along with safety advocacy groups, have been calling for such a rule and it is long over-due in our view. A large percentage of the industry already uses the Speed Limiters, since doing so saves fuel, reduces maintenance costs and lowers their fleet’s crash-rates.

Simply put, there is no other change available today that combines already installed technology (no capital cost), proven savings, increased safety, and reduced pollution.

We are extremely grateful to the FMCSA for moving this along and especially want to thank Acting Administrator Hutcheson and Secretary Buttigieg for recognizing this as a priority.
